BRIEF 4: DESIGN - Packaging Design

Net's for the packaging, the net was a simple wrap or fold around the Ice Lolly which was then fixed with double sided tape. The top and bottom were then affix together with the stickiness of the packaging itself which what a revealable sticky surface, making a candy bar like wrapper for the lollies.

BRIEF 4: DESIGN - Crafting

To craft the lollies we made cardboard moulds, in which we poured blended yoghurt into to form the lolly based. The craft there form we used cake cutter to craft the shape of the type, we left these to freeze before placing them on the yoghurt and then refreezing. Packaging was crafted from silver foil and we displayed our submission in a metal basket of ice along with a poster.

BRIEF 4: DISCOVER - Visual Research

In order to craft our packaging for our entry we researched into a range of illustrations style to depict the different flavours of ice lolly that we would be crafting.

BRIEF 4: DISCOVER - User Research

Edible type is target at all three years of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Leeds College of Art. However as myself and Eve have extended the brief to include packaging the target market could potentially be more commercial market, such as graphic designers in a wider context and those who appreciate design.

BRIEF 4: DISCOVER - Market Research

After developing some initial ideas we decided to look what was already out there in terms of Ice Lolly creations. We found a range of examples that used fruit within Ice Lollies as well some illustrated examples which gave us some ideas about what to incorporate typography into our entry.

BRIEF 4: DISCOVER - Brainstorming Ideas

We any food at our disposable myself and Eve wanted to do something completely new. We decided to created ice lollies, which is extremely far away from the digital cake ingredients that we’re used to. We called our entry ‘Ice Caps’ as a play on words, as the lollies are made of ice and the letter froms are capital letter, the double entendre of Ice caps denotes this as well as actual ice caps. We developed a logo which further helped depict this pun.

BRIEF 2: DESIGN - Final Photography

Myself and Eve worked with photography student Isobel Moore to get help setting up the lights for our photo shoot, Eve felt confident to take great shots but we needed help getting the lighting right for packaging. Isobel helped with this stage of the photo shoot once the lights had been calibrated correctly Eve acted as photographer and I acted as set assistant getting the packaging and food ready for photography. Collaboratively we worked together to art direct the shoot, we shared the same opinions in how we wanted to the work to be photographed. Due to the help with the little there was little that needs doing to photos in post production, the main edits that occurred where slight colour corrections across the chosen set of images and removing imperfections in the images like minor damage that occurred to the packaging during the shoot.
